Right from the start of "Rappaccini’s Daughter," Nathaniel Hawthorne makes it clear that Giovanni Guasconti isn't just checking into an old apartment in Padua—he is stepping directly into Dante’s Inferno.1,2 Giovanni rents a dark, rundown room in an ancient palazzo, immediately recognizing the armorial bearings over the entrance and recalling that an ancestor of that family was condemned by Dante to suffer "immortal agonies" in Hell.2 By specifically linking the lodgings to the Scrovegni family—a real Paduan dynasty Dante consigned to the seventh circle of Hell as usurers (the predatory lenders of his day)—Hawthorne sets the stage in a place steeped in moral and spiritual corruption.3
This setting borrows heavily from the structural and moral logic of the Divine Comedy.4 When Dame Lisabetta tells a homesick Giovanni to gaze out at the "bright sunshine" and casually asks the saints to watch over him, Hawthorne is playing on two major Dantean ideas:5,6
The Dantean Requirement of Descent: Lisabetta’s cheery suggestion to look at the sun echoes Dante’s failed attempt to climb the sunlit hill in Inferno I.7 Dante could not hike straight toward the light after getting lost in the dark wood; he had to journey through Hell first to understand sin before he was fit for purgation.8,9 Similarly, Giovanni cannot protect himself with pleasant daytime views or naive optimism. Throughout Hawthorne’s fiction, callow, untried characters often attempt to remain pure spectators to corruption, only to discover that human brokenness cannot be bypassed.10,11 Arriving as an untested youth relying entirely on surface impressions, Giovanni finds that looking down into Rappaccini’s inverted Eden forces him out of his shallow comfort zone.12 Hawthorne physically engineers Giovanni’s high chamber to dramatize this threshold: positioned between the bright, ordinary skies of Padua and the sunken, toxic laboratory below, Giovanni chooses to lean over the sill and cast his eyes downward, initiating his entanglement with the garden's poison.12
The Breakdown of Guidance and Reason: In Purgatorio XVI, Dante outlines his "Two Suns" theory, arguing that human flourishing requires a balance between two guiding lights: spiritual authority (to guide the soul toward God) and temporal authority or secular reason (to maintain earthly justice and order).13,14,15 In Hawthorne’s Padua, both guides have failed.16 Spiritual guidance has degraded into empty, commercialized hospitality and hollow superstition from Lisabetta, while earthly reason and natural science have mutated into Dr. Rappaccini’s hubristic obsession with playing God.17,18,19
Turning away from the open sky, Giovanni looks down into a corrupted world where he will soon discover that both faith and intellect have run completely off the rails. Such a corupt world also exist in our own reality today 20,21,22
